Artist’s Statement
In this new body of work, I am looking to create visions of altered realities. Each work possesses some blending of reality and vagueness; perhaps a vision, perhaps a dream, ultimately ethereal. Parts of the work evoke traditional landscapes and natural settings, then skewing them with various alternative themes such as space, underwater or underground.
Earlier works created focused on assemblage and utilizing found objects, echoing a “controlled chaos” manner. This previous method of work was very additive. The new body of work as seen on this site is striving for a more pared down, reductive and cohesive style.
These new works are created by moving india ink around wood board via blown air. Inks are blown around found objects and templates, creating desired shapes and designs. Pouring acrylics are also used to create slight relief points that are more dense in color and weight.
The frames for this series were purposefully built in size and color. The red and black of the frames not only tie into the painting it houses, but are meant to act as a constant throughout the body of work; acting as a visual anchor, whether pieces are separate or shown together.
In the final steps of creation, various varnishes and polyurethanes are used to create an amber sheen, helping to evoke an overall fleeting dream-state. Frames are treated with red varnishes.
